汞元素在环境中以无机形态(Hg~0,Hg~(2+))和有机形态(CH_3Hg~+,C_2H_5Hg~+等)广泛存在。虽然含量甚微,但是由于其毒性大,早已被多国列入重点优先控制的污染物。汞元素在自然界中的赋存形态不同,毒性和环境行为亦不相同。研究表明,烷基汞主要包括甲基汞和乙基汞,是一类具有严重生物毒性的有机金属化合物,毒性要比无机汞大得多,其中毒性最强的是甲基汞。甲基汞(CH_3Hg~+)容易穿过血脑屏障对中枢神经系统造成严重的永久性损伤。
浩瀚色谱（山东）应用技术开发有限公司，根据巯基棉在一定酸性条件下能定量吸附烷基汞的原理，利用多通道并联的同相萃取装置，采用气相色谱法测定废水中烷基汞，并通过质量控制手段对方法进行研究。研究发现方法线性较好，甲基汞和乙基汞标准曲线线性均在0.999以上；当采样体积为200 mL时，甲基汞和乙基汞检出限分别为0.43和0.53 ng/L，两种化合物的精密度分别为2.8%和3.9%，回收率分别为87.2%和85.9%;另外采用农残级或色谱级的甲苯、洗脱液(盐酸)经溶剂萃取一次后，可满足方法的空白值要求。
