欧洲药典定义了两种类型的氮气：“医用氮气”和“低氧氮气”。顾名思义，前者（医用氮气）是用于医疗用途的，如医院。后者可用于如对氧敏感的药品的惰性保护。然而并没有水分、油分或者粒子的标准。仅仅要求低氧含量氮气纯度99.5%貌似是不充分的。根据生产、储存和运输的情况，剩下的0.5%可能就包含水分、油分等。
